The Union of Newtownards was officially formed 3rd September 1839 and had a population of 53,873.
Michael Gould's book, "The Workhouses of Ulster", which was published by the Ulster Architectural
Heritage Society in 1983 contains a picture of the Newtownards workhouse which was completed on the
21st December 1841. The building was designed to hold six hundred inmates.

The Board of Guardians of the Newtownards PLU represented sixteen electoral divisions:
Ballygowan, Ballyhalbert, Ballymaglaff, Ballywalter, Bangor (4), Comber (2), Carrowdore, Donaghadee (2),
Grey Abbey, Kilmood (2), Kircubbin, Moneyreagh, Mount Stewart, Newtown Ards (2), Newtown Ards South (2)
and Tullynakill. The figures represent guardians per division. link removed
