Mayor and councillor attend historical meeting in Belfast

Post by BASEL » Sun Mar 15, 2009 8:17 pm

MAYOR OF Greystones Cllr. George Jones, made history last night when he and Cllr. Pat Kililea attended a meeting of the Ards Burrough Council's Development Committee in Newtownards for the first time.

The invitation to address the full Council at their Development meeting was extended to the Mayor before Christmas and came about following the building up of a partnership relationship between Ards and Greystones.

Cllr. Jones said that he was delighted to have the opportunity to address the full Council.

'I would hope that the current working relationship can be put on a more formal basis going forward,' he said. Some years ago when Greystones showed an interest in linking with a Northern town, Cllr. Jones said that it was agreed Greystones would try to form a friendship with a mainly unionist area.

This was done because Greystones was unique in having a very mixed population and also because it would help to develop better understanding between different communities.

This informal link has existed for 20 years through the La Touche Legacy Conference, with the Mayor of Ards addressingthe conference.

This will be the first occasion when the Greystones Mayor will address the full Council.
