Occupations and Professions in your Family

Post by Christopher » Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:13 pm

A large amount of information about our ancestors can be found by using Google or other search engines. This is probably the best method as the links on some sites are broken. If you are stuck and can't find a way to find out moe about their occupations open a thread giving a few details about the ancestors you're attempting to trace and I'm sure members of this sitre will do their best to assist. A good starting point is the Rootsweb Guide to Tracing your Family Tree. Search for an article by Tony Robinson, of the BBC programme "The Time Team", as it contains some thoughts on genealogy which make interesting reading.

There are several useful sites which contain details of occupations ... these include ...
1. The Hall Genealogy website .
2. GenDoc's Glossary of Ranks, Occupations, Professions and Trades.
3. DOT Dictionary of Occupational Titles

There's also a large amount of online information relating to the following occupations ... .

Armed Forces
1. Army Museums Ogilby Trust
2. Finding British Army Ancestors
3. British Military Records
4. Military (Pay Site)
5. Royal Air Force - google for RAF National Archives
6. Royal Navy - google for Royal Navy National Archives
7. Royal Navy 20th Century
